Help Support Summer Learning Programs

We know that over 100 years of research shows that all students, regardless of income level, fall behind during the summer months when not engaged in learning. With the great need for summer learning programs to eliminate summer learning loss, United Way of Rhode Island and Hasbro are proud to announce the creation of the Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative. This partnership provides direct funding support and technical assistance to 11 programs in eight Rhode Island communities across our state. In total, more than 800 children will engage in hands-on learning projects, so they are prepared to excel when they return to school in the fall.

There are many ways YOU can help!

GIVE: Donate to the Summer Learning Supplies Drive at United Way's headquarters, 50 Valley Street, Providence or at any YLC event now through June 15, 2012.
Supplies needed include new and unopened:

  • Notebooks
  • Magic Markers
  • Pencils
  • Refillable Water Bottles
  • Sunscreen

ADVOCATE: Sign and mail a letter in support of funding for summer learning programs for children statewide. Click here for the letter to Senator DaPonte, Chairperson of Senate Committee on Finance, and click here for the letter to Representative Melo, Chairperson, House Committee on Finance.

You can also register to vote and head to the polls on Election Day.

VOLUNTEER: Host a collection bin for the Summer Learning Supplies Drive. YLC will provide a bin(s) and posters for you to host at your office, place of worship, etc. Let us know how many bins you would like by emailing youngleaders@uwri.org.

Community Opportunities

Join the Rhode Island Teaching Fellows

Rhode Island Teaching Fellows is a partnership between the Rhode Island Department of Education and The New Teacher Project (TNTP), a national nonprofit dedicated to closing the achievement gap. Since its inception, TNTP has trained or hired approximately 43,000 teachers, benefiting an estimated 7 million students nationwide.

Rhode Island Teaching Fellows is a highly selective program that trains accomplished professionals and recent college graduates to become high-impact teachers in schools serving disadvantaged students throughout the state. As a Fellow, you will begin making a difference for students right away, joining a network of dynamic teachers working to end a legacy of educational inequality. Learn more.

United Way of RI Young Leaders Circle (YLC) is willing to extend invitation to its membership or to promote an event via its website and/or Facebook page for groups, organizations or coalitions that offer volunteer, networking or professional development opportunities for Rhode Islanders in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s.  We cannot promote any fundraising events or events related to a political cause.  Events related to religion or religious affiliations cannot be promoted, but those sponsored by interfaith coalitions or religious human service organizations will be considered on a case by case basis.  Organizations/groups and the events they wish to promote must be Rhode Island based and shall not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability with respect to employment, volunteer participation, or the provision of services. YLC staff have the discretion to not promote an event to its membership if it feels the group or event does not meet these provisions.

If you wish to promote your event with YLC, please send an e-mail to youngleaders@uwri.org with your contact information, details of the event and brief (2-3 sentences) description of the event and why RI young professionals may be interested in this opportunity.
