Since 2005, UWRI has been a proud partner in the statewide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Campaign. United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI) funding for VITA sites is provided as part of a comprehensive strategy under UWRI’s Basic Supports goal. United Way invests in a continuum of services designed to create income stability for individuals and families, including a focus on financial stability, affordable housing, and health.

The VITA program is designed to provide working people who earn $55,000 or less with free income tax preparation services.

In 2014, UWRI launched a new strategic plan, LIVE UNITED 2020, with the goal of changing the lives of 250,000 Rhode Islanders by the year 2020. As part of this comprehensive strategy to provide stability and security to Rhode Islanders and their families, UWRI’s goal for the VITA program is to successfully complete 15,000 returns and reach a total of $20,000,000 in tax refunds and EITC credits by the year 2020.

Funding Availability

The total amount to be awarded for VITA program sites is $210,000 for each of three years, contingent upon annual fund availability. Funding will begin in October of 2016, and will be offered on a three-year cycle (tax seasons: 2016, 2017, and 2018). Grants will be annually renewable based on successful site performance and United Way fund availability. VITA site funding will be for up to eight months (October – May) per cycle.
