Give her a book — light up her face and her mind.
United Way of Rhode Island, in partnership with Books Are Wings and Women’s Leadership Council, proudly announce our sixth annual Book Drive, taking place April 24-June 2. This event unites local businesses, community partners, families, and individuals around a common goal—helping children read.
Although learning to read is the most important predictor of a child’s academic success, too many children struggle with this crucial milestone. Here in the Ocean State, 30% of fourth-graders read below grade level, and 42% of fourth-graders from low-income families score below proficient. When children have access to books at home they become stronger readers and better students. Still, many children live in homes without them—but together we will change that.
Last year, with your help, we collected 40,000 books; books that are now in the homes of children across Rhode Island. Let’s do it again! You can help by donating your new and lightly used books, or by registering to host a book drive for your neighborhood, work place, or faith community.
Donated books are distributed to children through Books Are Wings and education programs, including the Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative.
