preview-full-20150815 UWRI 208_P1The fifth annual Children’s Book Drive is a collaborative effort between United Way of Rhode Island and Books Are Wings to engage local businesses, community organizations, individuals and families to help foster a love of reading while encouraging children to build their own libraries at home. This year’s book collection will start on May 1 and end on June 10, just in time for summer learning.

Did you know? Two-thirds of America’s children living in poverty have no books at home.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

DONATE

We’re collecting all new and gently used books for children of all ages (birth–teen), fiction and nonfiction, in all subject areas are welcome. Books about science, technology, engineering and math, for grades 5 through 9, will support learning programs with a STEM focus.

VOLUNTEER

Don’t have any books to donate? You can still make a difference by joining us on Day of Action. Day of Action is a worldwide United Way volunteer event, offering volunteer opportunities focused on the work of local United Way organizations.

In Rhode Island, the Day of Action will be held on June 18 to sort, label and prepare the books for distribution to children in summer learning programs and afterschool programs in the fall.

HOST A BOOK DRIVE

Individual collections can run for any period of time between those dates: a few weeks, a full month or the entire time. And we’ve done a lot of the work for you!
