Literacy Kits Project – Each family is asked to purchase a new children’s book (or two) for which they, as a family , will make puppets, games and other visual reading aids as a way to engage children in reading. Literacy Kits deepen a child’s reading experience, making the book more engaging, bringing the book to life. Using their creativity, along with arts and crafts supplies provided and the encouragement of United Way staff, families at this event will create a prop, activity, puppet or game designed to make the reading experience more interactive and enjoyable for the child and to encourage family reading. Each participant will receive a Live United tee shirt for participating. And UWRI’s 2-1-1 RV will be present for the children to tour.

Children’s Book Drive & Day of Action

Book Drive Dates:  April 24 – June 2

Companies, families and individuals will be collecting new and gently used children’s books for our annual drive, founded by Women’s Leadership Circle (WLC) and now in our sixth year. Last year we collected a record 40,500 books.  To date, we have distributed over 126,500 books to children for their home libraries. UWRI is also a collection site. So if you have any children’s books you’d like to donate, or if you wish to purchase a book from our Amazon Wish List (in process right now), we’d love to have your donations.  Anyone wishing to set up a book drive is welcome to contact us at bookdrive@uwri.org and we’ll provide you with information, posters, and a social media kit.

Day of Action

Day of Action Project: Volunteers will sort through the books collected through our book drives assessing damage, adding a bookplate for the child to personalize the book, and sorting by age group.  Books will then be organized for distribution to children in quality learning programs including the Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative.
