Children’s Book Drive

The final count is in: 22,159 books were collected through the third annual Children’s Book Drive! Created by the Women’s Leadership Council of United Way and Books Are Wings, the annual Book Drive was held May 1 through June 13 to coincide with the start of summer learning programs.

More than 70 businesses and organizations participated in the collection drive and 120 volunteers sorted and packed books at our Day of Action on June 21 - joining volunteers everywhere is a worldwide United Way day to create positive change in our local communities.

The book distribution has begun: books started leaving our offices June 23, headed to 17 Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative programs. Children enrolled in these programs, and in afterschool programs in the fall, will choose books to take and keep. The books serve a critical need: in Rhode Island, 60% of low income children do not have books in the home and 1 in 3 fourth graders are not proficient in reading, a key predictor of future school success.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Children’s Book Drive and Day of Action such a wonderful success. Working together, we can change lives and strengthen our community.
