Women's Leadership Council
Children’s Book Drive
The Women’s Leadership Council's 2nd annual Children’s Book Drive ran from May 1 – June 30, 2013. In partnership with Books Are Wings, the effort engaged local businesses, community organizations, and families to help foster a love of reading while encouraging children to build their own libraries at home.
This year's goal was to collect 10,000 books to be distributed to children across the state at Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative programs and during the Back to School Celebration RI event in August. The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative, which was established in partnership with United Way of Rhode Island, provides children with an opportunity to avoid summer learning loss by engaging in hands-on learning and service learning projects.
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the community, along with 60 local businesses and organizations that held collections, 30,000 books were donated tripling the original goal. In support of our effort, 190 volunteers selflessly gave of their time over the course of a summer weekend to sort, label, organize and transport the books.
