Summer Learning Initiative: 2020 – 2023

The Summer Learning Initiative model: learning doesn’t just happen in a classroom.
What is the Summer Learning Initiative?

The Summer Learning Initiative (SLI), supported by Hasbro and Women United, is a six-week model that combines hands-on experiences with real-world applications. SLI programs focus on service learning, which helps young people become more engaged with their communities by identifying issues and creating active solutions. Since 2012, the SLI has fostered academic, social, and emotional growth in thousands of local youth.

Request for Proposals

In December 2019, United Way of Rhode Island issued a Summer Learning Initiative request for proposals for 2020 – 2023. United Way received applications that proposed collaborative efforts among organizations, with the shared goal of providing high-quality summer learning opportunities for youth in Rhode Island.

The strongest applications put forth programs that:

  • Are non-hierarchical.
  • Have clearly defined roles.
  • Utilize the strengths of each organization.
  • Encourage open and honest communication.
Selected Communities

Based on the scores and comments from internal and external reviewers, United Way chose to fund the four communities shown below. These communities are geographically diverse, and will provide access to summer learning experiences for youth with financial or transportation barriers in different parts of the state.
